Now that you have found a new home you should start thinking about all
those things that need to be done to make your move as smooth as
possible. Below is a checklist of things to think about.
- Give your forwarding address to the post office-(2 to 4 weeks prior to moving)
- Contact the utilities companies- Electric, gas, telephone, sewer, oil, cable-Disconnect at your old home and connect at the new home
- Notify your bank, creditors and magazines of your new address
- Cancel the newspaper delivery
- Contact your insurance companies-End policies on your old home and get insurance for your new home.
- Contact moving companies and make arrangements for the move-You can't do this too soon!
- Don't forget to tell your friends and family-Give them your new address and phone number!
Have a back up plan just in case things do not happen as planned.
What will you do if the movers don't show up on time? If you are moving yourself- what if the truck is not big enough or is not available. I find that about 90% of my clients underestimate the amount of time it takes to pack and move themselves. About 50% of the clients that move themselves do not get a truck that is big enough for their belongings.
Give yourself
enough time and plan some extra time so that you can recover in the
event something does go wrong.
Most important, don't leave too much for the last minute. Almost
everyone underestimates how much time it takes to move out of their old
home and how much stuff is left to the end. Those last few items you
plan to just throw into the back of your car quickly turns into 2 car
loads!
Plan ahead, plan some extra time and plan to have a less stressful move!
