Lake and Dam
The Edward
MacDowell
Lake is a
beautiful and serene place to visit with the whole family.
With a small swimming
area next to a sandy beach, this lake is a perfect place for young children to
run around and have fun swimming and playing in the sand. The
Edward
MacDowell
Lake has a ramp
to put your canoe, kayak, or sailboat into the water for a quiet ride around the
lake.
Your family dog will also have a good time while your family sits on the
benches next to the water throwing sticks, balls, and Frisbees, or just watching
him or her splash around in the water.
Unlike many other lakes, The Edward MacDowell Lake has pegs in the ground
to play horseshoes. Along with picnic tables next to the sandy part of the lake,
there is also a roofed picnic area which has about ten picnic tables and a
barbeque for making delicious burgers, hot dogs, or anything else you bring to
cook.
On your way out, don't miss the Edward MacDowell Dam with its beautiful
scenery and plenty of space to play a game of volleyball or badminton at the
nets set up.
Edward MacDowell Lake was created by the construction of the Edward MacDowell Dam, in 1948-1950. It is part of a network of flood control stuctures in New England, built and operated by the US Army Corps of Engineers. The dam and the lake are on Nubanusit Brook, protecting Peterborough and other communities downstream.
