Home features that were once very popular and in demand are now falling out of favor. Here are few home features that I find are becoming less desirable by home buyers in New Hampshire.
Home features that were once very popular and in demand are now falling out of favor. Here are few home features that I find are becoming less desirable by home buyers in New Hampshire.
1. Fireplaces: The classic brick fireplace was very popular in the 80's and early 90's. In 1991, 62 percent of new homes had at least one. But the number has steadily been decreasing ever since. In 2007, the number dropped to 51 percent. Most homes today are getting gas fireplaces.
2. Carpet: While 54 percent of homes still have carpet floors, the number is decreasing and hardwood floors are very much in demand. Vinyl and ceramic tile flooring also are falling out of favor with buyers. Seventeen percent of new homes contain hardwood floors throughout the entire house.
3. Living room: It used to be the living room was the center of home activity. Now these formal rooms are giving way to open spaces and vanishing from newer homes. Thirty-four percent of consumers say they’re willing to buy a home without a living room.
4. Desks in the kitchen: Desks or phone centers were once coveted features of kitchens but they’re often too small and quickly become clutter spaces in a home. These areas have given way to the home office. Buyers now want a room or area that can serve as a formal office, large enough for a desk and file cabinets.Driven bythe inreased opportunity for many who are able to work from home on a frequent basis.
5. Skylights: Those windows in the roof were popular in the late 80's and 90's. But not anymore. Only 10 percent of new homes will include them this year, a continuing downward spiral for skylights.
